German-Australian physician, geographer, and botanist (1825-1896) who was appointed government botanist for the then colony of Victoria (Australia), and in that capacity named many Australian plants. ALS signed "Ferd. von Mueller," three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, no date. Handwritten letter to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, commenting on the death of their colleague Berthold Carl Seemann. In part: "The mail comes just in, dear Dr. Masters, and brings the sad tidings of the death of Seemann! I can gravely realize the idea, that it is so! I identified him still with youth and positively with robustness and energy. This is a sad loss indeed!" In fine condition.
