Handwritten letter to William Ormsby-Gore, 4th Baron Harlech, in full: "Many thanks for your letter suggesting Lonsdale's house as an alternative to Clarence House. I feel we shall have to go to Clarence House, and there are some advantages to it. The House will have to be thoroughly done up by your department!! it has a private gate & a more or less private garden. I have never really seen over it, & I wonder if you could get hold of the plans of it privately & let me have a look at them. I should be much interested to see them. It is very kind of you to have taken so much trouble over this." In fine condition. An exceptional letter from George VI, eager to find a larger house to suit his wife, the soon-to-be Queen Mother, and his two daughters: 10-year-old Elizabeth and 5-year-old Margaret. Little could he have predicted that following the abdication of his brother Edward on December 11, 1936, 'Bertie' would assume the throne a little over six months after writing this letter, moving from his modest dwelling at 145 Piccadilly W1 and directly into the sprawling abode of Buckingham Palace.
