Handwritten letter to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, in full: "Many thanks for your good care of the vine. I quite agree about the virtues of dormitiva. I wanted to show that it was not ruled by gravity. It would be an advance if one believed that opium owed its virtues to being kept in Paracelsus' sword handle, if one could show it had a virtue dormitiva of its own, but it is a negative sort of advance."
