Description

Handwritten letter by Napoleon's aide-de-camp and the architect of America's finest 18th-century forts

French general of engineers (1779-1839) who served as aide-de-camp to Napoleon Bonaparte from 1809 to 1812. He was banished from France after the emperor's abdication and emigrated to the United States, where he served as the architect of several forts along the eastern seaboard, including Fort Monroe and Fort Wool in Virginia; Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island; Fort Morgan in Alabama; and Fort McRee in Florida. He returned to France after the July Revolution of 1830 and served twice as Minister of War. ALS in French, signed “Bernard,” one page, 5 x 7.5, Minister of War letterhead, December 11, 1838. Untranslated handwritten letter regarding the retirement of an officer. In fine condition, with light scattered foxing and a few pencil annotations to the text.
