Description

London flying lessons with Peter Pan and Mary Blair

(Walt Disney Studios, 1953) Wondrous original concept painting by Mary Blair of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Wendy, Michael, and John soaring over London en route to the island of Neverland. Accomplished in tempera on 9.75 x 9.25 artist’s board, the scene wonderfully portrays the moment that Peter and Tinker Bell teach the Darling children to fly, leading them high above the city fog before coming to rest on the minute hand of Big Ben. The characters, silhouettes limned by the light of the moon, are centrally placed around the huge glowing clock, with hues of blue and purple adding a dreamlike quality to the magical scene. In fine condition, with tack holes to corners and minor wear to board. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Van Eaton Galleries.

Blair was a concept artist for Disney during the 1940s and early 1950s, working on designs for such films as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland. She also created designs for several Disney attractions (including It's a Small World), and her largest work, the multistory mosaic in Disney World's Contemporary Hotel concourse.
