Partly-printed DS, signed "M. Van Buren," one page, 10 x 7, November 20, 1839. President Van Buren appoints Benjamin N. Nichols as "a Passed Midshipman in the Navy of the United States." Nearly signed at the conclusion by President Van Buren and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy James Kirke Paulding. Nicely matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 23.5 x 15. In fine condition, with an area of creasing to the lower right, and the signature slightly faded.
