British soldier and adventurer (1803-1868) who founded the Raj of Sarawak in Borneo, ruling as the first White Rajah of Sarawak from 1841 until his death. ALS signed “J. Brooke,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7.25, February 15, 1852. Handwritten letter, in part: "I send my groom for the little horse with orders to return the same day if convenient. He carries a check for £60…which I suppose will do. I have just received excellent and cheering accounts from Sarawak." Affixed by its integral leaf to a larger scrapbook page and in fine condition.
