Description

The Governor-General of India aims to establish "a systematic interchange of plants and seeds between Europe and this mountainous range"

English Whig nobleman and colonial administrator (1784-1849) who served three times as First Lord of the Admiralty and who was Governor-General of India between 1836 and 1842, dedicating himself especially to the improvement of native schools and the expansion of the commercial industry of India. ALS signed “Auckland,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 9, April 25, 1839. Handwritten letter marked "Private," in part: "I have to thank you for your letter of the first of December—the two parcels which you have had the kindness to send to me have both reached me…The seeds of both have arrived in excellent condition and many of them are now growing in my garden, but I am sorry to say that the plants have without exception failed…I shall be very anxious for a report from you upon the seeds which I have sent home to you." He goes on to say that he hopes to establish "a systematic interchange of plants and seeds between Europe and this mountainous range." Addressed on the integral leaf in Eden's hand and franked in the lower left, "Auckland." In fine condition, with a seal-related tear and paper loss to the second page.
