Description

Politician and diplomat (1792-1864) who served as Vice President under James K. Polk from 1845 to 1849; the city of Dallas, Texas, is said to be named for him. ADS signed "G. M. Dallas," one page, 8 x 10, no date. Dallas writes out a petition to "the Honorable Levi Woodbury, Secretary of the Navy," in full: "The undersigned respectfully and anxiously write in recommending the application for a Warrant as a midshipman in the Navy of the United States, made by the Hon. Col. Raumfort, of Pennsylvania." In addition to Dallas, the petition is signed by 27 other Pennsylvania politicians, most whom represented the state in the 21st or 22nd United States Congress: James Ford, John C. Bucher, Lewis Dewart, Richard Coulter, David Potts, Jr., Joshua Evans, Jr., Samuel A. Smith, Philander Stephens, Joel K. Mann, Robert Allison, George Burd, Thomas M. T. McKennan, John Banks, William Wilkins, John G. Watmough, Harmar Denny, Thomas H. Crawford, Henry Horn, John Gilmore, William Hiester, Andrew Stewart, Joel B. Sutherland, Henry A. P. Muhlenberg, Robert McCoy, Henry King, Peter Ihrie, Jr., and Adam King. In fine condition.
