Description

Mitchell to a Gone With the Wind illustrator—"I am glad to know that Danish readers know of my appreciation for your work"

TLS signed “Margaret Mitchell Marsh,” one page, 7.25 x 11, personal letterhead, December 7, 1937. Letter to Danish cartoonist and illustrator Axel Mathiesen, in full: "Thank you so much for your picture. I am indeed happy to know what my 'illustrator looks like.' Thank you, too, for the newspaper clipping which carried a picture of you too. As I look at your two pictures I realize more than ever how much Danish and Scandinavian blood went into the making of America, especially in the section of the United States which we refer to as 'the Midwest,' for you could pass for a 'Midwesterner.' Or, should I say that many of our citizens who come from the neighborhood of Chicago could pass for Danes? I regret very much that the last part of the story in The Sunday American was missing. I am sending you the continuation on a separate sheet of paper. I was very glad to learn that my letter to you was printed in the Berlingske Tidende, for I am glad to know that Danish readers know of my appreciation for your work. I believe I told you that Mr. Hasselbalch sent me copies of your illustrations mounted on cardboard, which had been used for advertising displays in Danish book shops. These illustrations are still on display in the Atlanta Biltmore Hotel and still excite great interest. Various charitable organizations have requested the loan of all my foreign editions and your illustrations for their Christmas bazaars. Of course, I am very happy to give this permission. Should there be other newspaper stories about your work I will send you copies of them." In fine condition, with small stains to the upper right corner. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Denmark became the third country to receive a foreign language edition of Gone With the Wind, released by Copenhagen publisher Steen Hasselbalch with illustrations by Mathiesen. It was initially published in the fall of 1937 with a print run of 10,000 copies and sold out in a mere eleven days; by the next year, 90,000 copies had been sold, making 'Borte med Blaesten' one of the most successful Danish books to have ever been published.
