Description

Boston firefighters petition for a new carriage-house in 1833: "In storm, while the elements from above are showering down upon us, the fountains from beneath burst forth"

LS signed by a committee of three Boston firefighters, one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, January 23, 1833. Letter to Col. Thomas C. Amory, Chief Engineer of the Boston Fire Department, complaining about conditions and asking for his aid in improving them. In part: "The undersigned, in behalf of the 'Company of Firemen for Dist. 8,' beg leave to represent that the carriage-house now occupied by them, in its best state was but poorly adapted, to the purposes and meeting of the company and that the ravages of time have rendered it entirely unseaworthy, that beside the dilapidated state of the upper-works, her hull embedded so deeply in the mud that the floor in fair weather is subject to continual overflowing, and in storm, while the elements from above are showering down upon us, the fountains from beneath burst forth, and the meeting of the waters are truly jeopardizing to all the property entrusted to their care—the carriage, buckets and rags and all their regalia are continually covered with mildew. The company have occasionally laid in small stores for refreshment after fires which practice they have been obliged to abandon…the house is not only too small for the accommodation of the members, but that a fire when built makes but a feeble resistance to the cold coming from the open work in the wall. This committee are aware that the evils enumerated here have been but partially known to you and from that consideration are induced to present them in full, presuming upon their meeting a favorable consideration—as they have but a single object—the efficient, good order and well being of the Fire Department." In very good to fine condition, with a few minor stains a partial edge splits to folds.
