Commodore in the US Navy (1772-1838) who served in the Quasi-War with France, both Barbary Wars in North Africa, and the War of 1812 with Britain, and played a major role in the development of the standards, customs, and traditions of the American navy. LS signed “Jno. Rodgers,” one page, 8 x 9.75, July 3, 1805. Letter from on board the "U. States Ship Constitution," in part: "I have received your favour of this Day on the subject of Money's to answer such purposes as stated in your Letter—In answer permit me to acquaint you that after receiving the Pay Roll with a statement of the contingent expences you mention, that I shall so soon as the Money arrives, advance you accountable to the Navy Department for the same." In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top, some wrinkling, and a few small edge losses.
