Description

Naval officer during the War of 1812 who later seized the port of Monterey during the Mexican-American War (1790-1858); he was the model for Herman Melville's model 'Commodore J—' in Moby-Dick, and the 'Commodore' in White-Jacket. LS signed “Tho. ap C. Jones,” one page, 7.75 x 12.5, May 15, 1850. Jones forwards a letter from Joseph Gideon, who requests an appointment as Naval Store Keeper. Jones's statement, in part: "I take great pleasure in forwarding this application to the Honorable Secretary of the Navy, earnestly recommending Mr. Gideon for the appointment of Naval Storekeeper at whatever point the principal Naval Station may be established in California." In very good to fine condition, with show-through from wrigin on opposing sides, a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top, and partial separation to the hinge.
