Hardcover bound in the publisher's original decorative cloth with embossed black and gold illustrations, 10 x 12.5, 198 pages. Signed and inscribed opposite the half-title page in ink to her personal physician, "To Dr. Hoffmeister, from Victoria R, Balmoral, May 24, 1870." In very good to fine condition, with repairs including a rebacked spine and replaced endpapers, sunning to the spine, light cover wear, and dampstaining to the signed page.
In 1845, Hoffmeister was recommended by Sir James Clarke as the Medical Attendant to the Queen and Royal Family in the Isle of Wight. During some years he attended on the Queen at Balmoral; he also attended Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse, in her confinements at Darmstadt. He was knighted in 1884. An impressive volume with a great association.
