After abdicating his briefly held post as regent-president in the turmoil that followed the ascension of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1848, the fugitive leader made a successful tour of Britain and the United States. LS signed “L. Kossuth,” one page, 8 x 10, February 14, 1852. Letter sending "thanks for all the sentiments in respect to the cause." In part: "I am well aware of the difficulties that I partly met and partly have to meet yet;—still I entertain no doubt, that by the mercy of the Almighty and the good will and energy of the American people, the sacred cause of liberty must triumph on the Continent of Europe. Yes, Sir, you will oblige me very much by proceeding to raise arms and funds for my unfortunate country and I will feel greatly indebted if you will inform me in particular of what has been done."
