The first U.S. Army general officer (1887-1942) to be killed in World War II when his plane crashed during the Battle of Midway. Tinker was the highest ranking Native-American officer (as a member of the Osage Nation), and the first to reach that rank. During World War II, he had been assigned as Commander of the Seventh Air Force in Hawaii to reorganize the air defenses. Vintage sepia matte-finish 7 x 9 photo of General Tinker seated outdoors in his military uniform, signed and inscribed neatly in black ink, "To the Army's International acrobatic champion, Lt. Jack Fraim, best wishes, Clarence Tinker, C.O. 20th Pursuit.” In fine condition, with trimmed edges.
