Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in fountain pen, "To my granddaughter, Carrie Thompson Hurd, with best wishes, P. T. Barnum, Dec. 25th 1882." Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG-/None, with losses to head of spine, some flaking to leather, cracked front hinge, and foxing to frontispiece and title page. A desirable Christmas present from Barnum to his 20-year-old granddaughter; sadly, Caroline Thompson 'Carrie' Hurd died less than a year later on July 28, 1883.
