Description

'Chinese' Gordon on the funeral of Napoleon III

British general (1833-1885) who, in 1860, crushed the Taiping Rebellion in China, earning the nickname 'Chinese.' ALS in French, signed “C. G. Gordon,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, January 20, 1873. Handwritten letter commenting on the funeral of Napoleon III, in small part (translated): "I have no big news to say of the burial of the Emperor Napoleon." He describes it as a very solemn occasion, and notes that the "Italian soul" was represented by General Caselli and three officers in full dress uniform. In very good to fine condition, with red mounting remnants to two corners, and a mounting strip to reverse.
