Description

The British Adjutant-General acknowledges information relative to the "Ansbach Troops, at the time of their capture by the Enemy at York Town"

British Army officer (1727-1804) who served as Adjutant-General to the Forces from 1781 to 1799. ALS signed “Wm. Fawcett, Adj't Gen'l,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.5, November 25, 1783. Handwritten letter to "Lt. Col. Ross," with Revolutionary War-related content. In part: "I am very much obliged to you for your Favors…which brought me the only circumstantial account, I have been able to procure, relative to the state of the Ansbach Troops, at the time of their capture by the Enemy at York Town; since which Lord Cornwallis has been kind enough to send me the Book of Returns, to which you refer in your said Letter." In fine condition. Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, earned income from hiring auxiliary troops to King George III for the American Revolutionary War. Approximately one quarter of the forces who surrendered at Yorktown were the Margrave's German troops. Fawcett had requested information concerning the losses sustained by these troops, as the Margrave had made a considerable demand for reimbursement.
