Description

British historian and archaeologist (1817-1894) best known as the excavator of Nimrud and Nineveh, where he uncovered a large proportion of the Assyrian palace reliefs. ALS signed “A. H. Layard,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, May 5, 1882. Handwritten letter concerning the 'Nineveh Porch' at Canford Manor, a garden pavilion built to house ancient Assyrian statues and reliefs. In part: "I send you a plan of the Nineveh Porch at Canford as it is now building. You will see that it is more in the form of a cross…In comparing…the bronze plates with the originals I find that there are several inaccuracies. I should be glad if you yourself compare them…For instance the plate with the vultures tearing the hare or gazelle is not entire…I am much obliged to you for kindly promising to speak to the Prince. The sculpture for his R.H. is ready whenever you like to remove it." In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top.
