Description

Influential American horticulturist and botanist (1858-1954) who was cofounder of the American Society for Horticultural Science; he is credited with being instrumental in starting agricultural extension services, the 4-H movement, the nature study movement, parcel post, and rural electrification. ALS signed “L. H. Bailey,” one page both sides, 8 x 10.5, The Cornell University College of Agriculture letterhead, February 6, 1897. Handwritten letter to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, in part: "I am greatly obliged for your kindness and courtesy in writing me concerning the Veitch Medal, and also for your part in its awards. I assume that it is yourself whom I am to thank for the honor. I have already had a note from the secretary of the trustees and have written acceptance of the medal. I assure you that I appreciate the honor; but I cannot help feeling that it is quite undeserved. I hope that distance has not magnified the importance of my very humble work." Includes a vintage glossy 7 x 5 photo of Bailey at his desk, heavily enhanced with ink editorial marks, signed on the reverse by the botanist, "L. H. Bailey, Ithaca, N.Y." Letter is in fine condition, with creasing to corners; photo is in good to very good condition, with a tear throughout the side affecting the signature.
