Grand Duke of Tuscany (1642-1723) whose 53-year reign saw the decline of his nation's wealth and power. LS in Italian, one page, 5.75 x 8, January 12, 1692. Rare letter with the last four lines in Medici's own hand, mentioning the Grand Duchess and making reference to the war. In part (translated): "I must acknowledge receiving your esteemed letter in November and am grateful to you for all your goodness to my dear ones and myself. I thank God for it and beg Him to make your wife recuperate quickly. My esteemed Grand Duchess and my mother thank you for your expressions of regard…I notice the nation is spending fabulous sums for the continuation of the war…How much better it would be to have peace…I am happy to tell your excellency that your pictures are finished and have been forwarded to Dusseldorf, where they await your further orders." Inlaid into a larger sheet and in fine condition, with a small area of repaired paper loss to the middle of the bottom edge. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved portrait.
