Description

Souvenir typescript of the opening of Act 1 from Eugene Ionesco's famous 1959 avant garde play 'Rhinoceros,' one deckle-edge page, 6.5 x 9, signed at the bottom in ballpoint by Ionesco. The typescript, in part: "The scene is a square in a small provincial town. Up-stage a house composed of a ground floor and one storey. The ground floor is the window of a grocer's shop. The entrance is up two or three steps through a glass paned door. The word EPICERIE is written in bold letters above the windows of the shop." In very fine condition.

Along with Samuel Beckett, Ionesco was one of the founders of a style of drama coined 'The Theater of the Absurd,' which helped revolutionize drama with a radical new perspective. His avant garde plays, or 'anti plays,' as he called them, initiated a change in idea and technique in drama that commenced with his 1950 work The Bald Soprano.
