Description

Desirable souvenir relic tray from the 1937 dedication of Mount Hood's Timberline Lodge given to members of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's party, measuring 4.75″ in diameter and 1.25″ tall, with an image of the lodge at center, and the bottom reading: "Souvenir of the dedication of Mt. Hood Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood National Forest, by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President of the United States of America, September A.C. MCMXXXVII, This is myrtle wood from the Siskiyou National Forest of Oregon." Includes the original presentation card: "Compliments of U.S. Forest Service, to members of The President's Party," as well as the original box and the business card of Secret Service agent Paul M. Hart, who received the souvenir while working as part of FDR's detail. In fine condition.

A venture made possible by the New Deal's WPA, President Roosevelt dedicated the lodge by saying: "I am here to dedicate the Timberline Lodge and I do so in the words of the bronze tablet directly in front of me on the coping of this wonderful building: 'Timberline Lodge, Mount Hood National Forest dedicated September 28, 1937, by the President of the United States as a monument to the skill and faithful performance of workers on the rolls of the Works Progress Administration.'"
