Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744-1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as 'gerrymandering.' Third person ALS, signed "Mr. Gerry," one page, 7.75 x 7, 1776. Handwritten letter by Gerry, signed within the text in the third-person. In full: "Mr. Gerry's Complim'ts to Colo. Williams & request ye Favor of his Company at 7 o'clock to spend ye Evening." In good to very good condition, with scattered light foxing, soiling, staining, and complete splitting to the folds (one split repaired with tape on the reverse).
