Description

Postmaster general, secretary of war, and secretary of state under Washington (1745-1829). ALS signed “T. Pickering,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.5 x 9.75, December 26, 1805. Handwritten letter to "Mr.Nelson," concerning the "Accounts of Wm. Savage Esq. Agent of the U. States in Jamaica." In part: "Among the copies of vouchers in the affidavit of Muruss, deputy marshal, that Mr. Savage paid him £6.10—the sum charged for serving two writs…This and other vouchers transmitted to the department of state in Feb'y 1804, with Mr. Savage's answers to the objections to sundry items of his acct. warrant this fair inference—That if the persons to whom were made payments which still remain unvouched, were within reach, adequate proofs would in like manned be furnished. There is no room to suspect that the latter charges were not equally correct." He goes on to discuss various charges in detail. In fine condition, with staining along the edges.
