TLS signed “Peary,” one page, 8.5 x 11, February 20, 1914. Letter to the editor of The Journal in Somerville, Massachusetts, in part: "The following from your issue of the 13th is a good newspaper item, and the fact that it gives an erroneous impression, both of which I said, and of my own inferred egotism, is not of serious moment:
'We are rather surprised to hear Admiral Peary admit that the completion of the Panama canal is of far greater importance than his discovery of the North Pole, but we heartily agree with him. The completion of the Cape Cod canal will be, too.'
In order, however, that you may know just what I did say I enclose copy of my exact remarks. From this you will note that I compared the two great world dreams of the North Pole and the 'Secret of the Strait' (Panama Canal) for their very contrasts, and specified particularly that one (the North Pole) was a work of sentiment of no practical commercial or utilitarian value. The other (the Panama Canal) of infinite practical commercial value and assistance to the commerce of the whole world for all time. Both these great dreams have occupied the attention of some of the ablest explorers, financiers, and rulers, for nearly four centuries, and the fact that both now stand to the credit of this country should be a source of general pride and satisfaction." The letter is affixed to a same-size sheet. In very good to fine condition, with creasing and light staining from mounting, and a splotch to the first letter of the signature.
