Description

The 'Rock of Chickamauga' writes in support of a general who "feels convinced that he has some secret enemy who has poisoned the minds of the Authorities against him"

Union general (1816-1870) whose most decisive victory earned him the sobriquet 'Rock of Chickamauga.' ALS signed “Geo. H. Thomas, Maj. Gen'l U.S.A.,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Head-Qrs. Dept. of the Cumberland letterhead, April 19, 1867. Handwritten letter to a general, in full: "Since Genl. Cooke has been in Louisville has has had several conversations with me on the manner in which he thinks he has been treated since the commencement of the War. He feels convinced that he has some secret enemy who has poisoned the minds of the Authorities against him, and is consequently greatly worried and embarrassed. I sympathize with him most sincerely as I know very well what would be my sensations under such circumstances. I therefore unhesitatingly communicate his state of mind to you, feeling assured that you will not hesitate to inform him if there be any grounds for his suspicions." In fine condition.
