Description

"Though I am wounded, I am not slain / I will lay me down and bleed awhile, / And then rise and fight again"

President Theodore Roosevelt's son (1887-1944) who died following the Normandy invasion and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, November 7, 1924. Letter to Warren B. Ashmead, quoting a verse from John Dryden. In full: "To say you are a trump is putting it mildly. It is the support of people such as you that has made the defeat worth while. Also I like to believe that my fight helped the republican ticket in general, which is what counts. There is a line from an old poem that runs: 'Though I am wounded, I am not slain / I will lay me down and bleed awhile, / And then rise and fight again.'" In very good to fine condition, with light creasing and toning, and repaired splits to folds. Ronald Reagan would famously invoke the same words following his defeat by Gerald R. Ford for the presidential nomination at the 1976 Republican National Convention.
