Description

Extract of a report from General Arthur St. Clair's evacuation of Ticonderoga, and news of negotiations on a large loan from France

The Pennsylvania Packet or the General Advertiser, March 25, 1779; printed and sold by John Dunlap. Extract of report from "General Sinclair’s" [Arthur St. Clair’s] defense of his conduct in evacuating Ticonderoga. [In April 1777, St. Clair was sent to defend Fort Ticonderoga. His small garrison could not resist British General John Burgoyne’s larger force in the Saratoga campaign. St. Clair was forced to retreat at the Siege of Fort Ticonderoga on July 5, 1777. He withdrew his forces and played no further part in the campaign. In 1778 he was court-martialed for the loss of Ticonderoga. The court exonerated him and he returned to duty, although he was no longer given any battlefield commands.] American Commissioners in France negotiated a loan in Amsterdam of one million pounds sterling in behalf of the United States. Large woodcut of the full-blooded horse Babraham.
