Description

War-dated letter from Wilder during officer training—"I feel as tho' I'd never been healthier, better, harder worked or happier"

World War II-dated ALS penned on the reverse of a 3.25 x 5.5 government postcard, July 28, 1942. Handwritten letter to Private Leonard Nathan at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in full: "Many thanks for your letter. Well, well!—if we'd foreseen these changes the old classroom would have been a very different place. I doubt whether I could have put my mind on my work. So far I feel as tho' I'd never been healthier, better, harder worked or happier. From here I go to a still more difficult sch—Army Air Intelligence at Harrisburg, Pa., and from there I hope overseas. It would be fine if our paths could cross before or after it's all over. Glad to hear you get some time for the typewriter. I can't, and as I feel now don't want to. = I'm having the same difficulty as you with Technical subjects. I hope I 'pass.' All best wishes." Wilder incorporates his signature into the return address field: "Capt. Thornton Wilder, A.A.F. O.T.S. A U.S., Miami Beach, Fl." In fine condition. A scarce wartime letter penned by Wilder during officer training. During World War II, Wilder rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Air Force Intelligence, first in Africa, then in Italy until 1945. He received several awards for his military service.
