English military officer and royal governor of the provinces of Massachusetts and New Hampshire (1662-1742). Scarce partly-printed DS, one page, 16 x 13.25, September 2, 1717. As governor of His Majesty's Province of the Massachusetts-Bay in New-England, Shute appoints Abijah Carpenter as "Ensign of the Company of Foot." Signed at the conclusion by Shute and countersigned by John Boydell as his secretary. The white paper seal affixed to the upper left corner remains intact. In very good condition, with scattered foxing, areas of paper loss, and complete silking to the reverse.
