Description

Virginia statesman and jurist (1798-1871) who, as a U.S. senator, drafted the infamous Fugitive Slave Act. As a member of the Confederate Congress, he worked actively as a diplomat to gain European support for the Confederacy. Scarce ALS signed “J. M. Mason,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.75 x 8.5, October 28, 1855. Lengthy handwritten letter to Obadiah Jennings Wise, attaché to the American embassy in Berlin, Germany, son to Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise, and brother to Virginia Congressman John Sergeant Wise. Mason forwards a letter from Wise, Sr., which concerns his placement as the Secretary of Legation to France, a post which he would soon accept. In fine condition.
