Description

Eccentric English aristocrat and politician (1661-1723) who, as a cousin of Queen Anne, was appointed as colonial governor of New York and New Jersey. Remembered for a lavish lifestyle, monetary corruption, and alleged cross-dressing, Cornbury was one of early America's most colorful characters. Manuscript DS, signed “Cornbury,” one page both sides, 8.25 x 12.75, December 4, 1702. Last will and testament of Jacob Rattier, a Huguenot mariner who died shortly after executing this document, signed on the front by Rattier and three witnesses including Giles Gaudineau, a local early French New York doctor; endorsed on the reverse as a witness by the newly appointed governor, Edward Hyde, 3rd Earl of Clarendon, better known by his noble title, Lord Cornbury. Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition.
