Description

Blair recreates a flying lesson with Peter Pan and Tinker Bell

(Walt Disney Studios, 1953) Beautiful original concept painting by Mary Blair of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, and John and Wendy Darling soaring over London en route to the island of Neverland. Accomplished in tempera on 10 x 9 artist’s board, the scene wonderfully portrays the moment that Peter and Tinker Bell teach the Darling children to fly, leading them on a starry night over the clouds and city before coming to rest on the minute hand of Big Ben, which is shown looming high above the London fog. The scene is exquisitely captured with various elements of light: the shine of a full moon, the glow of the Big Ben clock, the twinkle of several distant stars, and the soft flicker of a fairy leading the way. In fine condition, with tack holes to corners.

Blair was a concept artist for Disney during the 1940s and early 1950s, working on designs for such films as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland. She also created designs for several Disney attractions (including It's a Small World), and her largest work ever, the multi-story mosaic in Disney World's Contemporary Hotel concourse.
