Description

Unique 1867 Pennsylvania Railroad deed with oversized hand-drawn track map

Civil engineer, industrialist, and entrepreneur (1808-1874) who led the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1852 until his death, developing it into one of the largest business enterprises in America and a world-class model for technological and managerial innovation. Uncommon manuscript DS, signed “J. Edgar Thomson, Prest.,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 9 x 15.75, April 30, 1867. Indenture by which the Pennsylvania Rail Road Company assigns the Reading and Columbia Rail Road Company the right to "make, construct and forever maintain their said rail-road of one or more tracks over, through and upon all that certain strip of land (a plan whereof is hereto attached, marked 'C' and made part hereof) situate in the Borough of Columbia." Signed at the conclusion by Thomson, and countersigned by a secretary, treasurer, and two witnesses. The attached hand-drawn "Plan C" unfolds to 46.5 x 15, and shows the tracks for the two railroad lines running parallel to each other. A manuscript cover sheet summarizes the project. In very good to fine condition, with crudely repaired splits to the cover sheet summary, and expected folds and wear to the document.
