Description

Order of Leopold medal presented to Al Worden while he and the Apollo 15 crew attended the 22nd International Astronautical Congress in Brussels, Belgium, between September 20-25, 1971. The badge of the order is a white-enameled Maltese Cross, with a green-enameled wreath of laurel and oak leaves; the front bears a central disc featuring a lion on a black enamel background, and the reverse bears a central disc with the face-to-face monogram "LR" (for King Leopold I); both discs are surrounded by a red enamel ring with the motto ‘Unity Is Strength’ in French and in Dutch. The cross is topped by a crown and a purple ribbon. Includes its original black presentation case.

The medal is accompanied by a three-ring binder containing 16 vintage glossy photos, 8 x 10 and 10 x 8, each featuring images of the Apollo 15 crew prior to and during their attendance of the 22nd International Astronautical Congress, with each photo bearing affixed typed captions. In overall fine to very good condition, with wear to hinge of medal case, binder dings (and small tears) to edges of photos, which also feature some show-through from adhesive.

From the collection of Apollo 15 CMP Al Worden, and accompanied by a letter of provenance from his daughter Alison (Worden) Penczak.
