Description

Apollo 11 'Type 1' insurance cover presented to a NASA Safety Manager

Highly desirable Apollo 11 ‘Type 1' insurance cover with a color cachet of lunar surface activities, postmarked at Houston on July 20, 1969, the moon landing date of the Lunar Module Eagle, signed in black felt tip prior to launch by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin. These historic covers were flown to Houston after launch for cancellation by Apollo 10 Commander Tom Stafford in his T-38 jet. In fine condition, with slight fading to the signatures.

Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the son of Kay Miller, to whom the envelope is addressed: “This cover has been in the family of Bobby J. Miller’s possession since July 1969. [He] served as Systems Safety Manager / Safety Branch Manager / Payload Safety Manager at NASA, retired 1983. It is addressed to his wife…The cover was signed for my father at work, where his office was in the same building as many of the astronauts and next to Neil Armstrong’s office.” Included is a vintage NASA photo of Miller, and copies of three letters addressed to Miller while employed at NASA.

The famous insurance covers, first produced for Apollo 11, were to provide financial security for astronauts' families in case of disaster. They have earned near-legendary status as the ultimate space-related philatelic item and one of the most sought-after formats for astronaut autographs.
