Description

Rare handwritten letter by Flying Cadet Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr.—early correspondence from the start of his flying career

ALS signed “C. A. Lindbergh, Jr.,” one page, 7 x 10.5, Flying Cadets, Brooks Field letterhead, July 28, 1924. Handwritten letter to the Wells-Dickey Trust Company in Minneapolis, written amidst his attempts to resolve issues involving his late father's messy estate. In full: "Enclosed are papers you requested. Please keep me informed of developments." Lindbergh also writes out his address in block letters below: "C. A. Lindbergh Jr., Cadet Detachment, Brooks Field, San Antonio, Texas." In fine condition.

This is a most unusual letter, written four months after Lindbergh enlisted as a pilot cadet at Brooks Field in the US Army Air Corps. Correspondence from Lindbergh during this period is almost nonexistent—he was not yet famous, and military flight training occupied most of his time. It also boasts his early signature—including the "Jr."—which he used regularly up until the death of his father two months earlier, in May 1924. In signing this letter, he reverts to this variation—possibly in deference to his father, or to distinguish himself as his son in matters pertaining to the estate.

The letterhead is embossed with beautiful silver pilot's wings representing the Flying Cadets, and very few autographs from Lindbergh's time as a cadet in the US Army has entered the marketplace. In the 1950s, Lindbergh's letters to the Wells-Dickey Trust Company were 'rescued' from the document-burning furnace in the basement of the bank.
