He shared an Oscar with Orry-Kelly and Irene Sharaff for An American in Paris, and is best known for his work on Gone with the Wind and Singin' in the Rain. Exquisite lot of three original costume sketches designed by Academy Award-winning costume designer Walter Plunkett for the 1960 MGM comedy musical Bells Are Ringing. The sketches, ranging in size from 9 x 15 to 12.5 x 16.75, are expertly accomplished in variations of graphite, ink, pastel, and watercolor. Each sketch is affixed or stapled to a slightly larger mount, which bear approval initials and pencil notations to the front and/or back. The sketches are as follows:

Actress Jean Stapleton dressed in a lovely soft blue spotted dress, a sample of which is stapled to the upper left corner, and the mount reverse stamped as “Prod. No. 1760, Sketch No. 498, Name Jean Stapleton, Fitter Vivian Moore, Date 9/21/59, Sequence #3.”

Actress Valerie Allen wearing a black knee-high skirt and a flounced white-and-pink top with matching hat, a sample of which is affixed to the upper left corner, and the label affixed to mount reverse stamped “Prod. No. 1760, Sketch No. 464, Name (Olga) Carmen Phillips, Fitter Brucie, Date 9/3/59, Sequence Ch. 1 (Sc. 40).”

Actress Valerie Allen holding a martini and wearing a beautiful beige-tone one-shoulder cocktail dress, a sample of which is stapled to the upper left corner, with the lower left marked “Olga, #3…Larry’s Party,” and the label affixed to mount reverse stamped “Prod. No. 1760, Sketch No. 466, Name Valerie Allen (Olga), Fitter Bruce, Date 9/3/59, Sequence Ch. 3, (Sc. 153 x 1).” In overall fine condition, with some wear and toning to edges, which could be easily matted out if so desired.
