Rutherford B. Hayes

Partly-printed DS as Governor of Ohio, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 13.75 x 17.75, December 5, 1871. Governor Hayes appoints Ralph P. Buckland as a "Delegate to the Commercial Convention at Detroit." Signed neatly at the conclusion by Hayes and countersigned by Ohio Secretary of State Isaac R. Sherwood. In fine condition, with intersecting folds.

Sherwood (1835-1925) was a politician and newspaper editor from Toledo, Ohio, as well as an officer in the Union army during the Civil War. He served nine terms in the United States Congress, and was a noted pacifist during World War I. Ralph Pomeroy Buckland (1812-1892) was a U.S. Representative from Ohio, as well as a brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and an executive of the Union Pacific Railroad following the war.
