Description

President Tyler directs the War Department to lend arms to a Virginia Military Academy

Autograph endorsement as president, signed "J. Tyler," on the reverse of a letter written to him by William Collins, one page, 8 x 10, December 29, 1842. Tyler writes, in full: "If this could be done it would be a public benefit and no public loss." The letter by Collins to Tyler, written from Portsmouth, Virginia on behalf of the Virginia Literary, Scientific and Military Academy, in part: "When I had the pleasure of seeing you, you expressed your willingness to loan me for the use of the Military Academy here, a few light, short muskets or carbines. When I presented your note to the Secretary of the Navy, the only objection he urged was that as it was a school in Virginia possibly exception might be taken. Could not the arms be obtained from the War Department, should you direct it." In fine condition.
