Five former First Ladies remember life at the White House

Wonderful grouping of White House recollections from five former First Ladies of the United States—Barbara Bush, Rosalynn Carter, Betty Ford, Lady Bird Johnson, and Nancy Reagan. The handwritten memories are penned in blue or black felt tip on individual mats ranging in size from 12 x 14 to 15.75 x 16.5, each of which contains attractive glossy photos of the White House exterior at various times of the year. The remembrances read as follows:

“Such happy memories! Looking at the south lawn reminds us of our grandchildren riding bikes around the drive; Boris Yeltsin, George and I walking down to greet some surprised tourists at the fence; Millie and her puppies playing in the sun; Ranger and Millie chasing squirrels; and music and song and happy happy times. Barbara Bush.”

“We loved the late afternoon when we could slip away to the Truman balcony for long talks about the day’s events. Rosalynn Carter.”

“State arrivals on the west lawn—especially the arrival ceremonies of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip in July of the Bicentennial Year—Family gatherings on the Truman Balcony—The oohs and ahhs of family and friends watching the fireworks lighting up the Washington Monument—Happy memories—Betty Ford, June 8, 1988.”

“—a party in a snow-storm (with all the stories of ‘how we got here’)—summer evenings on the Truman Balcony with our family—the Clarion call of ‘Hail to the Chief’ at the head of the stairs—memories of five years of a full ship—Lady Bird Johnson.”

“So many wonderful memories—Christmas at the White House was always magical and special—watching the fourth of July fireworks display from the balcony with family and friends. Many, many happy times. Nancy Reagan.” In overall fine to very fine condition.
