Description

Early handwritten letter from Congressman Obama, thanking a supporter for "a careful reading" of Dreams from My Father

ALS signed “Barack,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, January 4, 1998. Letter to Sheila Jackson, in full: "I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your very kind letter several months ago. I had been saving the letter with the hope of finding the time to respond to it properly, and unfortunately misplaced it, so I didn't have your address until you called. At any rate, I certainly appreciated the interest you took in the book, and the time you took to write so thoughtfully about it. It's rare for a writer to get such a careful reading, and to know that he's engaged someone out there in a conversation about things that are important. I confirm that I don't recall all the questions that you had for me, but hopefully the last section of the book answered some of them. Perhaps I will answer some of them in the next book I write! In the meantime, I wish you all the best, and hope that 1998 brings you much joy." In fine condition.

Accompanied by the original hand-addressed "Friends of Barack Obama" mailing envelope, and by a letter of provenance from the original recipient: "Back in 1997, I was a news reporter for WVON radio station here in Chicago. I met Mr. Obama at a community ribbon cutting ceremony and was simply enthralled by his mere presence...This encounter led me to do more research about this figure of a man. A close friend of his worked for the radio station and gave me a brief background about his personal life and then recommended I read the book, ‘Dreams from My Father.’ I had so many questions about what was written on those pages…I decided to write Mr. Obama a personal letter asking him to answer some of my wonderings. Weeks and months passed and I heard nothing back…I even mentioned his ‘rudeness’ to my co-worker…His response was, ‘Hmmm, I’m surprised he didn't respond to you. Give him a call.’ I left a message with his receptionist. To my surprise….months later I received this letter. How happy and impressed I was that he took out the time to: 1. Read my letter. 2. Acknowledge his appreciation for my close read, 3. Being honest about misplacing my original letter, and finally, taking the time to put pen to paper and write back!”
