Description

Tribute to the Bronx River Parkway, now a "place where passing souls can rest / on the way, and be their best"

American poet and lecturer (1852-1940) whose poem 'Lincoln, the Man of the People' was presented at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. Autograph manuscript signed "Edwin Markham," one page, 10 x 8, West New Brighton, N.Y., January 1, 1929. Markham pays tribute to the Bronx River Parkway, in full: "Next to the home, the tree-lined road and the wayside bridge have ever been dear and near to the heart of man. So our own Bronx River Parkway—an enduring, tree-sheltered, all-serving road—will long give joy to our people. All gratitude and honor, therefore, to the engineers, landscape architects and gardeners who have transformed an unsightly, malodorous drain into a place of delight and romantic beauty—a place that not only speeds the wheels of commerce, but also is 'A place where passing souls can rest / On the way, and be their best.'" Markham draws from his own poem, 'A Prayer,' for the final couplet. In fine condition, with two vertical folds, and light stains to the two right corners.
