Description

TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, November 2, 1920. Letter to Ralph H. Whitney in New York City, in full: "Your letter of October twenty-third has cheered and pleased me very much, and I want to send you what I beg you to believe is by no means a perfunctory line of thanks and appreciation, but a real message of friendship and gratitude." In very good condition, with creasing and staining, and toning and chipping to the right edge. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, with the lower corner clipped off.

Written on election day in 1920, Wilson likely responds to a supporter who thanked him for his eight years as president. Privately, Wilson had hoped to run for a third term, but because of his unpopularity and poor health (he was recovering from a stroke, as evidenced by his shaky signature) party leaders instead nominated James Cox who went on to lose to Warren G. Harding.
