Description

Timesheet from Kerouac's two-month stint as a railroad brakeman

Unsigned handwritten train schedule in pencil by Jack Kerouac, one page, 6.25 x 8.5, circa 1953. Headed "April, 2nd Half, SLO," Kerouac logs his hours in San Luis Obispo ("SLO") and Santa Barbara ("SB") for April 25-30, noting times and earnings amounting to a total of $110. In very good condition, with three horizontal folds, and scattered creasing and staining.

In the spring of 1953—before becoming a famous writer—Kerouac went to San Luis Obispo to earn money as a railroad brakeman. He was continually writing during this period, earning money through odd jobs and not sticking to any one position for very long. His stay in San Luis Obispo lasted only from April-May, when he took a job at sea working on a freighter.
