Description

Original British linen-backed patent lithograph for the Wright Brothers' improvement in aeronautical machines, one page, 14.25 x 10, March 19, 1904. The diagram features three views of the Wright flyer with 'wing warping' mechanism for maintaining stability in flight. The top border reads: "A.D. 1904. March 19. No. 6732. Wright & Another's Complete Specification." The lower borders feature the printed text: "Malby & Sons, Photo-Litho." The right border reads: "This Drawing is a reproduction of the Original on a reduced scale." In fine condition.

Orville and Wilbur Wright patented a wing-twisting technique as a method for steering an airplane, which eventually resulted in a patent battle as others had fitted their planes with similar mechanisms. The dispute culminated in an October 1914 settlement in which the British government paid £15,000 to the British Wright Company.
