Description

Pioneer executive (1878-1961) who played a key role in the development of the United States film industry. After receiving a presidential pardon for income tax evasion, he played a key role in launching Marilyn Monroe's career. He was also one of the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and in 1952 he was given a special Academy Award in recognition of his important contribution to the development of the industry. TLS signed “Joe Schenck,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation letterhead, June 28, 1951. Letter to Florence Marly, in full: "The part of Countess Anna in Five Fingers would be a very excellent part for you and I shall recommend to Mr. Mankiewicz when he returns to make a test of you for the part." In very good condition, with creasing, and multiple intersecting folds. Florence Marly (1919-1978) was a Czech-born French film actress who was married to film director Pierre Chenal. The role of Countess Anna Staviska in the 1952 spy film 5 Fingers ultimately went to Danielle Darrieux. From the collection of Stephen Adamson.
