TLS signed “Joe McCarthy,” one page, 8 x 10.5, United States Senate letterhead, no date but circa 1954. Letter to Frank C. Hanighen, editor of Human Events. in full: “With the Times-Herald gone, it seems to me that Washingtonians who were in the habit of reading that paper for the viewpoint it represented would now have to turn to Human Events. Where else can they get the 'right' side of the news?” In very good condition, with light creasing, an extra horizontal fold, and light show-through at the top from old adhesive residue on the back.
The Washington Times-Herald was purchased by the liberal Washington Post in 1954, thus dating this letter. Human Events is a conservative paper founded in 1944. It was Ronald Reagan’s favorite paper and he credited it with helping him to 'stop being a liberal Democrat.' McCarthy’s play on words in the last sentence, of course, refers to the conservative bent of the paper, which aligned with his own political philosophy.
